I find that
in order to be an effective teacher I need to know my students learning styles, I need to find time to address their individual
questions, I need to encourage curiosities, and I need to teach via a variety of methods. This picture was taken during
a recent lab. As the class worked to complete their lab reports, I had the opportunity
to check in with this one student who was struggling to connect the content with information he had seen before. These five minutes allowed this student to truly comprehend content and to connect it to the bigger picture
of life.
Below is a photograph of a word board developed for one of my
ESOL classes. This ever-evolving bulletin board is filled with vocabulary pertinent to the current content. Definitions and examples are given during class, and student’s record their thoughts about, and draw
pictures of, each word in an interactive notebook. Vocabulary is such a large
part of Biology, and I find that my English Language Learners are more apt to use terms comfortably and appropriately when
they have been exposed to them in a variety of settings.
